Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to me as independent thinkers, ready to take on leadership roles all while eager to learn. They love hands- on, engaging activities that take them out of their comfort zone! If they are not learning prepositions while playing "Simon Says", they are busy performing "Text Features Surgery" or "Saving the Unicorns" while prepping for their state mandated assessment.
Our school is located right at the border with Mexico with many students going back and forth during the week.
9 of my students are English Language Learners that are eager to immerge in the learning.
Though they come from various socioeconomic backgrounds, my students are inquisitive and independent thinkers, ready to take on any challenge.
My Project
The titles I've chosen will help my students develop a growth mindset while also exposing them to a diverse amount of books. "Ms. Alcantara, can we go read in the class library?" is a question I often get from my students. My kiddos have a love for reading that goes beyond the classroom setting. The books I have chosen have one thing in common- they all teach great lessons on persistence, resilience, and empathy.
"Malala's Magic Pencil," will teach my students about the power of perseverance while exposing them to real world figures.
My students will be able to choose from a variety of books that meet their personal interests and reading levels. They will also be able to identify with characters that not only look like them, but face similar struggles as them. My hope is that they will grow from the experiences they are reading.
