My students need flexible seating and math materials for personalized learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The students I service are 90% African American from a low income household with huge academic gaps. Many of the students have experience trauma in their lives or have witnessed something traumatic. According to data, students demonstrate below grade level skills in math and literacy. Students are demonstrating struggles in basic computations and problem solving skills as well comprehension.
Though the majority of my students have the mindset that their academic ability is fixed and cannot be changed, they are eager learners.
They have hopes and dreams. When their interest is awakened they become persistent as well as successful. In order to keep their interest flourishing and allowing them to dream out loud, necessary materials are needed to assist in closing the academic gaps, helping them feel they belong in their academic community, that success is attainable, that their ability and competence grows with their effort and their work has value. Materials are needed to help increase and sustain positive attitudes toward school, classwork, teachers and their peers. This will assist in personalized learning, cooperative learning and students will invest more of themselves in their learning.
The flexible seating furniture will assist with personalized learning. It will assist with promoting growth mindset in students. It will help students feel they belong to their academic community and give them comfort, letting them know choices are okay and allowed. The mathematical centers chosen will meet the needs of all grade levels being taught. The math centers will be used as individualized and small group resources to closed academic gaps as well as strengthen skills to promote growth and the mindset of success. The center(s) will assist student development and understanding of common core standards across grade levels with rigor by allowing kinesthetic and visual learning, meeting students at their level.
The donations for this project will improve my ability to provide the appropriate interventions and attention to my students as well as provide choices that help students understand their work has value for them and they can succeed.
While I'm working with a group, a student needing their own space or needing a different atmosphere to concentrate may utilize the flexible seating table outside/inside the classroom. Students who are diagnosed with disabilities may use flexible seating to reinforce their focus because they are able to move and feel they belong to their academic community. This will decrease behavioral issues and the focus returns to learning.
