My students need books to read at school and home. They need a variety of books based on reading experience, their personal interests, and choice. They need many reading experiences. They need a “Bookshop”!
The enduring quality that I adore most about my precious kindergarteners and what makes them such very special learners is that they ALL are highly and intrinsically motivated to learn about EVERYTHING and ANYTHING! Their curiosity is ravenous and each seeks to find answers to their millions of questions each day. They are dreamers and have big plans. They need to be well read and build background knowledge to prepare for their bright futures. “The Bookshop” will give my students this opportunity.
My Project
“The Bookshop” will grow in a prominent corner of our classroom. It is the heart of our learning community. Kindergarteners will have times to browse and choose books for their own personal daily reading. They can choose books that they have a high interest in reading. The books will have a range of complexity in text, so that each emerging reader can grow in their reading skills and strategies. They will be given an opportunity to practice the reading skills that they are developing in a highly motivating book and, at the same time, take them home to read to family and return them for new books! These books will make an enormous difference in my students’ reading proficiency. These materials will help my emerging readers with early literacy skills and concepts, sight word fluency, and decoding words. Most importantly, this project will launch our youngest learners into developing a life long habit of interest, choice, and love for reading!
