My Students
I work with a unique group of students, with a range of skills and abilities. They are students on the autism spectrum, with behavioral challenges, developmental delays, or medical fragility that adversely impacts their ability to learn in the same environment, and at the same pace as their peers. In my Life Skills program, students work on developing adaptive, self-care skills, social/emotional skills, improving their stamina to participate in a classroom setting as young learners, along with core curriculum in ELA, math and science.
My Project
Because of their special needs, the students in my program do their best learning with one-on-one adult support or in small groups of two to three. This makes the typical classroom set up of neat rows of individual desks facing a blackboard unrealistic and ineffective in advancing their learning.
By creating work stations that accommodate one or two students and one adult, I can give them an ideal learning environment that allows them to focus with fewer environmental distractions.
I have selected pieces of writing center furniture that are functional, well-made and will last for many years to come to serve future students with similar needs.
