Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Moving on to first grade! I'm so excited to teach first grade and help a fabulous group of kids learn! Our school is very diverse and approximately 80 percent of our students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch. We have many refugee families and approximately a third of my class are English Language Learners. Many of my students also participate in our districts backpack program.

My first graders have already been through a lot in their lives, but they work hard and strive to have a growth mindset every day.

We help each other do our best every day. We have the mindset that things may not always be easy, but I just haven't learned how to do it "YET".

My Project

My students start each day with a STEM bin of their choice. We use our time to get our bodies settled and to get our creative "juices" flowing. We quietly work side by side creating structures and exploring. At the end of our STEM time we choose a handful of students each day to share their creative designs. It's so much fun to see kids who struggle academically feel comfortable enough to share their creations. This has become one of our favorite times of the day.

The magnetic building block sets would be a great addition to our classroom.

The kids could create a variety of vehicles, buildings and sculptures with the colorful magnetic blocks. We have a limited number of stem bins to choose from so this project would give us a variety of magnetic hands on tubs to choose from in our classroom.
