Lullaby, goodnight, pleasant dreams until morning! Growing up, I heard nightly a whisper of a caring adult bestowing upon me this simple request as I settled down in my warm bed in my cozy house in my safe neighborhood. I can't imagine falling asleep without having thoughts of sleeping tight and not letting the bedbugs bite, but I know in many children that I teach aren't as fortunate. Many are growing up in poverty and are being raised in single family homes. Some are sleeping at day care or being awaken to go home late at night. Their world is so different than mine.
Starlight, star bright...the first star I see tonight...I wish I may...have this wish I wish tonight.
I wish all children could feel secure when they put down their weary heads. I wish for them a peaceful and restful slumber. I wish I knew they had a pillow to call their own and a blanket to keep them warm so they could wake up well-rested and ready to start their day on the right foot while Mr. Golden Sun shines down on them as they head off to face the challenges of the day.
My Project
Once upon a time, there were weary little kids who worried about where they would rest their sleepy heads every night as the stars would appear in the night sky. Would they fall asleep to the sounds of crickets chirping outside their window? Would they have a caring adult to tuck them into bed? Would they be able to wish upon a star and have their wishes come true?
Well, now their lonesome nights are over because Mr. Sandman can bring them a dream.
They will know where they can rest their little heads as they drift off to sleep because you cared. You gave them a pillow to call their own so that they can lay down their heads and turn off their brains while they are trying to sleep.
As the lights go out and the world becomes peaceful, my students will be able to fall asleep. Their only worry should be now how bad their bedhead will be when they wake up as an early bird. They won't spend their nights tossing and turning or busy counting sheep; instead, they will be able to get a good night's sleep. They will be able to dream bigger, be grateful, give love to others, and laugh lots. But, most importantly, they will be able to thrive in school and grow up to live happily ever after!
