Our Kindergarten is a full-day program with an emphasis on balanced literacy, STEAM, and play-based learning experiences. Our classroom family is wonderfully diverse and every child brings a unique set of abilities, challenges, and life experiences with him/her to our school. Play-based interactive learning allows all of our kids to share a common language and bond of childhood.
My Kindergarteners' play and interactions reflect their growing understanding of the many cultures that make our world and classroom family special; play helps them learn compassion, empathy and how to communicate and share ideas respectfully.
Modeling and nurturing these life skills in early childhood will set them up to be kind, caring, and inclusive toward others.
Dollhouse play is a powerful imaginative, social, and emotional outlet--something I've seen children needing and seeking out recently, particularly as we experience the effects of home-isolation due to Covid-19. Anticipating the social-emotional needs of our current and incoming Kindergarteners, this dollhouse project is designed to encourage social interaction and friendship-making as students engage in dramatic play. My intention is to stock the dollhouse center with several different figurines and accessories to promote storytelling and conversation and appeal to all children. Acting out scenarios and creating storylines helps children learn about each other and make sense of the world around them.
This Dollhouse Center will make a difference in the lives of my students because it gives them an outlet for creative and imaginative play, as well as provides them with a space to safely explore and express their ideas and emotions.
A Dollhouse Center will give my students open-ended opportunities to develop and practice empathy. It is sure to be a favorite gathering space for making new friends and great memories in Kindergarten.
