Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 700 students have so much creativity, inspiration and talent to draw beautiful murals, serene landscapes, wacky creatures and dignified portraits. However were their pencils to break, they would not be able to sharpen them to continue their masterpieces.
My school is a K-8 school with about 700 students!
These students travel from a variety of neighborhoods to get to school every morning, some even take 2 buses and a train to get to school! About 75% of the students are in the free or reduced lunch program. Despite the distances my students travel or their income level, they are all eager to learn, hungry for hands on activities, lively, energetic and creative in a variety of ways.
My Project
Art is a very important part of the curriculum at our school. Our students are very fortunate to have art classes and even a separate art room. Since the students are hands on learners and incredibly creative they really look forward to art every week. However, not having such basic resources as pencil sharpeners severely limits what can happen in art class. As we all know coloring with dull pencils is futile and creating a refined drawing with a dull pencil is nearly impossible.
As of right now, my art room has 0 pencil sharpers.
When I need to sharpen pencils I will need to go into another teacher's room or the main office to complete this task. Donations for these seemingly basic objects will make a huge difference in my art class, in that students can actually take off, draw, color, and explore their creativity and talent.
