The very nature of art encourages young people to become close observers of their surroundings. It is my hope that drawing boards would allow us to enjoy our developing green spaces and promote more creativity from my students. Instead of working from pictures we could actually observe nature.
We have a wide range of very talented young people (as the art teacher I would think that of course) at our school.
From Kindergarten through 5th Grade our students come to us in all shapes, sizes, nationalities and with many different gifts and challenges.
Our "Green" elementary school was renovated about 10 years ago and it is a very happy environment for students. We have been working to create a green classroom outdoors to allow firsthand observation and hands-on experiences. The children love getting their hands dirty from working with clay to planting native plants. Hands-on experiences are the most memorable.
My Project
We live in a beautiful part of the world and I would like to allow my students to be outdoors to learn to appreciate their environment. Recently we have been working to learn to draw trees; sounds silly but have you ever tried it? What a great asset it would be to be able to take one's drawing board outdoors to really observe a tree while you are drawing it. A set of drawing boards would allow us to explore with our eyes while we record our observations with our pencils, pastels and paints.
There is nothing more enjoyable than giving authenticity to a child's experiences.
Working from and learning in our natural environment is a wonderful gift. Please afford us the opportunity and flexibility to give these experiences to our students.
