My students are awesome! We all learn differently, and we process differently. We have to make it through Algebra to graduate, and these guys can do it. We just need a couple of extra tools and some different approaches to learning.
My students are freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.
All are on IEP's and all are on at least their second attempt through Algebra. Some are on attempt three or four! We are located in a high achieving, high expectation school and area, which makes these students struggles that much harder. Most of their friends do not understand, and it can be embarrassing to say they are in Algebra.
My Project
We hope to use the materials to take an active approach to learning Algebra. Everyone loves whiteboards and being able to erase our mistakes. These graphing whiteboards and erasable markers will help us to continue to practice in a less threatening environment. They will also make it easier to distinguish those students who understand the concepts from those who don't.
These graphing whiteboards and erasable markers will give my students a fresh chance to pass Algebra so that they can graduate.
This project will also let the students know there are others who struggle in math and that people outside of their 'bubble' do care that they learn this material and graduate.
