This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in a rural community. We have an enrollment of about four hundred students and we are a Title One school. The school is a family school; we live, work, play and worship very closely with one another.
Our kindergarten children are some of the most energetic, curious and caring children we've had the pleasure to guide in some time.
The teachers and assistants have been busily working with them and getting to know their individual personalities. Our boys and girls have varied interests. They're all different but what they all have in common, is a love for the school and learning new things, as well as a drive to grow in our learning community. They need to thrive in an atmosphere that will enrich their background knowledge and immerse them in authentic learning experiences! That's why we've pledged to dig deeper in our learning this year!
My Project
This year I spent a lot of time studying dramatic play and the benefit toward children's learning and development. During dramatic play center times children get time to socialize, communicate and put learned vocabulary into action, and learn how to problem solve in real time. As of late, our kindergarten classrooms have not been very conducive to this type of purposeful, constructive playtime. We had begun to move away from this fruitful type of play and kid-watching. The materials I want to add to our classroom in dramatic play centers, such as the dolls and community helpers will help me to structure play scenarios for the children that they can use to get back to more purposeful play.
