A typical day in my class is full of fun, creativity, and of course, lots of learning!. I like to give my students a fun and safe learning environment where they can have enjoyable experiences. In addition to learning how to read and write, our class enjoys exploring art and culture!
I work in a very old school building located in a small, low-income, high poverty town, riddled with drug abuse.
Many students are in foster care situations. Most of the children in my care are being raised in single-parent homes with many other siblings, many are being cared for by grandparents or other family members, and even family friends. This year, every student qualified for free or reduced lunches.
My Project
At the beginning of the school year, I had my students draw a picture of what they would like to have in our classroom! So many of them drew or wrote about a play kitchen! A play kitchen will help my students express themselves in many areas! It will also help them to learn about different kinds of food, restaurants, and families! We already have many prop boxes ready to go along with our play kitchen. We have a pizza shop, bakery, flower shop, and McDonald's! These items will give us an area to implement these prop boxes!
My students work hard, a dramatic play area, like a play kitchen is the perfect for letting them express themselves in a healthy way!
A play kitchen would help me create a dramatic play area in my classroom. The dramatic play center is a place students can go to pretend, imagine, and be creative. Students can pretend to be anyone and do anything! That is powerful for our little learners. It is a place that promotes high level thinking, problem solving, turn taking, and is rich in vocabulary. Students can learn and develop skills in all learning domains (language, literacy, math, science, social studies, fine motor, gross motor, and social skills) through pretend play.
