Mrs. Street from Detroit MI is requesting educational kits & games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need dramatic play materials, dollhouse, furniture and dolls, to encourage them to move, communicate, manipulate with their hands, be social and have fun learning about the world around them.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come to school everyday ready to share their experiences, desires, hopes and dreams with me. Their imaginations and desires for their life inspires everyone privileged enough to hear. All of my students reside on the North East side of Detroit, in an area decimated by factory closures and still recovering from the 1967 riots. Vacant lots, boarded up buildings and tall grass surround our school neighborhood but this blight and image of urban despair does not stop my student from dreaming of the brightness of possibilities their future holds. My students are preparing to be our future leaders and need our help to get them the necessary tools of success.
I am requesting some dramatic play materials including: wooden dollhouse, furniture and two sets of family members that look like the students I teach. Dramatic play is scientifically proven to improve students with cognitive impairment's ability to communicate, manipulate objects and socialize. My student's with cognitive impairments or other severe disabilities range from age 5-11 and the severity of their cognitive abilities differ but overall the biggest challenges each of them encounter is their ability to communicate their needs, wants, thoughts and feelings and their ability to create and maintain meaningful and appropriate social relationships.
The dramatic play materials will allow my students the opportunity to play together, communicate their needs, wants, thoughts and feelings while engaging in real-life like scenarios.
Role-playing allows students the opportunity to build positive socialization skills needed to build and maintain positive peer relationships. The dramatic play materials will be used in a variety of teacher-led ways including: giving problems the students will have to solve, communicating cause and effect scenarios, sequencing events and role-playing positive ways to communicate with each other.
