I serve at a middle school in a center city Philadelphia working to unlock the potential of some of the city's most underserved Black & brown youth who hail from neighborhoods all over the city. Where many schools have failed, our school has achieved excellence for our children through a rigorous college preparatory program and a commitment to peace and nonviolence in our community, both within our walls and beyond.
The environment our school provides is one in which our students feel safe enough to take the risks necessary for learning.
By providing a safe place and encouraging individuality, students achieve both academic and emotional growth to prepare them for the challenges they will face in college and beyond.
By engaging with our community, my students are disproving stereotypes and improving their neighborhoods. Because of our high standards and our commitment to each individual student’s potential, we are closing the gap between educational experiences that may have failed our children in the past and the incredible opportunities that lie ahead.
My Project
Happy Winter! Shout-out to all those who love HOODY weather :)
Want to help me give my student their very own school-sweatshirt, which they can wear to school daily?
Which former middle schooler among us did not want their own comfy school-name hoody growing up? Especially one that also meets the criteria of the school-approved uniform. Typically, school-wide "SWAG" clothing/uniform sales only happen twice a year. Many of my students missed this first round and the next schoolwide sale is not until the spring. Missing out on the school swag sale is pretty common with 5th and 6th graders. While our school's uniform code is flexible enough to meet *every* student where they are, in the winter season it tends to be harder for some students to meet this standard.
Outdoor cold weather is a lot different from indoor cold weather, especially when the indoors we are talking about is a classroom environment. I teach a range of students from nearly every 5th and 6th grade math classroom in the school. I want the students to be comfortable when they are learning and working in my classroom and under my care. (Oh, and my classroom is FREEZING this year.)
Thank you for looking out for us! Help us stay fly and cozy! We can't wait to update you with our new swag pics :)
