My 8th grade science students are fantastic! They are inquisitive scientists and work hard to make sure they are learning what they need to know. They are upbeat and energetic and a joy to teach every day. Some of my students have learning challenges, but they don’t let that stop them! They keep trying no matter what. The students are very bright and love to participate in STEM challenges. We need flexible seating options in our classroom to help us accomplish our learning goals.
This year I am working to make our classroom a more comfortable and inviting place for the students by providing flexible seating options. The students work collaboratively on most projects, so it is important for them to have places to sit that allow for effective communication. My students are very energetic and many of my 8th graders are adult size. This makes typical middle school seating options uncomfortable for them. They often have difficulty sitting still and focusing on tasks.
My goal is to create gathering spaces in the classroom for collaborative work and provide students with flexible, more comfortable seating arrangements.
I have a few older office chairs in our classroom that are available on a first-come, first-served basis. These are very popular and students arrive early to class to get them. Recently, I've borrowed some wobble chairs from the media center and the students seem more focused when they sit on them. Research shows that this type of motion can help students focus better when they are in class, especially for students who have difficulty with concentration and paying attention. Kids need to be able to wiggle!
I would like to add wobble chairs and yoga balls to our classroom seating options to help the students focus better. My students have also requested a large classroom rug so that they could sit on the floor to work at times. In my experience, students work best in comfortable environments. As the day goes on, students get tired from sitting all day and have more difficulty concentrating. Please help me make my classroom a place of active learning and provide my students with flexible seating options to help them focus and learn better.
