Red Legged frogs can tell us about the health of our wetlands.
Our school is located in a rural coastal town.
Our afterschool TAG green team call themselves the "Red Legged Warriors." The have set out to protect and educate the public about the importance of the Red Legged Frog and the wetlands where they live. The Red Legged Frog is highlighted in the Oregon Conservation Strategy as species in need of help—that is, they have low or declining populations.
My Project
My students need a folding table, nets, clipboards and educational displays to collect and analyze data. Having the resources to collect scientific data and use scientific inquiry to learn about the health of our wetlands and protect the Red Legged frog will help students understand ecology, interdependence of species, natural history, government, math, and data collection.
Students will take field trips to the wetlands and survey the frog population looking at what species prefer what type of plants. Students will also research frogs and create an educational flier.
The experience they learn collecting data in the field with help them gain hands on real world experience that will help students read text books and take test.
Students will also gain a respect and hopefully a love for their community and all the critters that live there.
