I work in a kindergarten through eighth-grade public school in the center of downtown Bakersfield. Our school is small, with approximately thirty-five students per grade level. The school´s demographics are composed of approximately forty percent Hispanic, forty percent Caucasian, ten percent African American, and ten percent undisclosed race. Approximately twenty-five percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
I feel I have found the ideal age group to spearhead a school-wide Recycling Club.
I teach third grade. My students are learning many new skills. Some of the most important are how to write essays, multiply, and divide. I look forward to establishing the value of recycling and reusing at my school and to see the students understand their impact on the world.
The materials in the grant will allow my students to implement a recycling club on our campus by putting large recycling collection boxes in every classroom. I hope the materials will motivate all students and teachers to be more thoughtful with their choices. The classroom boxes will be monitored by my students. We will save items that can be recycled for money in the mesh bags to generate funds for special programs, needed materials, or activities.
The recycling club will also explore the importance of recycling and the positive impact they can have on the world.
We will keep a data log of how much recycling the Club has collected so the students will see how much they have accomplished. I will have the students share their knowledge with the campus by having them make informational posters and by doing short presentations. The recycling books and situation cards will give them references to cite during their presentations.
I hope the Recycling Club will inspire students to become more involved with their community. I believe the students will feel the importance of their work and hopefully, will find a passion that could one day turn into a career.
