My students walk in ready to deliver and take on the tasks of the class. When they are all here, I can confidently say, "All of my favorite students are here today," as they boast about who, if any, is the actual favorite.
I teach at a K-12 school where students readily accept one another as they are.
Their camaraderie impresses me daily and allows us to dive deep into authentic learning experiences. My students' exposure to opportunities is limited in our distant, rural setting. As a result, the students love novel, new information, and are filled with curiosity.
My Project
Our industrial maker space has seen some awesome improvements lately because of donors like you.
A student of mine was troubleshooting a machine issue when he realized there was a missing bolt.
The student asked how can I figure out what type of bolt it is? I said well you will have to trial and error it with these types of bolts, but they won't be the type you need to complete your repair.
"Wow, Mr. Barbercheck, you've got us all this nice equipment but you haven't got us a set of bolts?"
Without going too deeply into my shop growth strategy, and picking battles one at a time, I reflected that he had an extremely valid point.
Donors have brought us a collection of wood screws that have streamlined personal project completion, exterior hardware that has helped us build outdoor projects for our science department, yet we were without a set of the basic nuts and bolts.
Students will use these hex bolts in their own personal design projects. Students will use these hex bolts and nuts to repair equipment around the school and shop and replace missing hardware. Students will use the nuts and bolts in their metal fabrication projects. Having these nuts and bolts will further instill a fundamental industrial skill of hardware applications.
This project will provide not only a healthy growth to our young makers' hardware collection it will also help facilitate the organization of the hardware with the same type of bins we use for all of our other hardware. As we continue to grow and adapt our industrial maker space, mobility has also grown in importance. The casters will be used to aid in the construction of a mobile hardware shelf to hold the bins.
