My students need bins, a paper tray and other basic organizational and classroom materials in order for all of their hands-on activities, writing papers and school basics to be accessible at all times.
My students are absolutely amazing in every way. Our class is complete with 25 enthusiastic, curious and animated first graders from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our class is an integrated co-teaching (ICT) classroom meaning that some students have special needs. Our needs range from speech and language disorders to autism and none of the labels stop any of the students from trying their hardest and always exceeding expectations. These 25 students are dedicated; excelling in the classroom is the norm!
Our class of students is a unique, clever, determined and persistent bunch with a range of interests and needs - making each and every lesson new and exciting!
My co-teacher and I take a very hands-on approach to education which allows students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
My Project
First grade is a huge year for elementary school students academically, socially and emotionally. It is the first year where students really learn how to "do school." They learn how to read harder books and how to make sense of them, they learn how to organize their thoughts and write them down and they learn how to dissect word problems and number sentences. In order for them to excel at these, it is imperative that they also gain independence within the classroom. This independence gives them ownership of their work and allows them to flourish both in and out of the classroom.
All of these basic materials and organizational tools will aid my students in gaining independence by allowing them to take ownership in their learning.
The bins will be used to organize math games and manipulatives. They will be labeled and easily accessible at all times. The paper organizers will be used to group different types of paper so that students can make their own choices of paper in Writing Workshop and the paper cutter can be used to create various sizes of paper. The individual cardboard desks will help students in staying focused and having their own space during independent work in lessons. The EXPO markers will be used on the dry erase board and the hooks will be used for hanging student resources. All of these materials will benefit each and every student in my class. My students deserve the opportunity to use materials that will aid them in their independence and I can only imagine the impact it will have!
