My Students
All of my students have a story, though none of them are the same. Some have parents in prison, others live in group homes. Some were born to migrant families, others have lived in our zip code their whole lives. Most live below the poverty line, and all of them want a bright future.
Many enter my courses because it's an "easy elective," but they leave prepared for real life.
As a CTE (Career Technical Education) teacher, I strive to provide students with opportunities to prepare for their future roles as students, employees, parents, and community members. This requires real-world lessons about real-life issues they will face. And it requires meaningful discussions about their personal experiences and how they influence the future.
Sometimes our society stereotypes teens as entitled troublemakers, but I have found in working with my students that they are curious, compassionate, and connected individuals seeking happiness in life. They just need tools and mentoring to meet their goals.
My Project
It seems gun violence is becoming more prevalent in the United States. Just a few days ago, a high school in Florida experienced a tragedy that took the lives of 17 people. Public places like schools are in danger of active shooter situations, and as a teacher I feel I must take action.
At my school the teachers have been trained on how to handle active shooter situations and we have lockdown drills quarterly, but that is still not enough.
It is hard to know exactly how the situation were to unfold if my high school was the next target. To protect my students and myself, I sought a product that could secure my classroom from intruders. Because my classroom door opens to the outside, there are very few products that can secure that door. This door stop slides right over the joint of my classroom door. This product is easy to use, easy to store, and highly effective. I am requesting three of these door stops because I teach in three different classrooms throughout the year, and I want to make each room I teach in to be safe.
I know I cannot change gun policies or school safety plans. But I can take some steps to make my classroom safer, and I feel this product can do the trick. Thank you for helping me protect my students, whom I cherish!
