Doodling in Class...A Sketchy Idea

My students need sketchbooks, materials to create their drawings (sketching pencils, colored pencils, erasers, markers, crayons, and pencil sharpeners), and plastic bags for storage.

My Students

My classroom is a dynamic space where students share ideas and engage in rigorous academic discourse.

My 5th graders are eager learners, enthusiastic, and inquisitive about the world around them.

They absolutely deserve the best, but limited resources both at the school and in the community make it challenging to provide them with everything they need to be successful scholars. Approximately 80% of the students at my school are English learners, 20% newcomers to the country, and over 95% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

My Project

Over the years, most of their school days have been spent learning academic English through the various core subjects: language arts, math, science, and social studies. As a result, they have had limited experiences with art and are often reluctant to draw freely.

Providing students with the opportunity to use their imagination is essential in cultivating their creativity.

I would like to help students develop their creativity by having them draw in their own sketchbooks with their own materials (pencils, erasers, crayons, and markers). Students will be able to take ownership of their art and have the freedom to express themselves. Having individual sketchbooks and supplies will encourage students to be creative and innovative, skills which transfer over into all academic subject areas.

Right now, students who want to sketch have to do it on scratch paper, as our school has a very limited paper supply. Consequently, this artwork often ends up in the recycling bin. Also, too many students tell me they are not good at art, and they are reluctant to do anything art-related. This mini-portfolio in their sketchbook will allow students to keep all their drawings in one place and will also help boost their confidence and encourage them to take more artistic risks. Students will enjoy art for the sake of art.
