Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Every day, my students ask "Miss, what are we doing today?" and the usual response is "Learning!" followed by groans and eye-rolling. My students come from low-income households and receive free breakfast and lunch in school. Often school work isn't their primary focus, and it can be hard to motivate them to take their learning seriously. As part of my practice, I try to bring creative and challenging research projects to the classroom in order to advance their learning and inquiry about the world around them.

My Project

My students recently received 3Doodlers to give them access to 21st century technology and take their history projects to the next level. Learning history should not only come from books, and in our classroom we re-create history in many ways. My students enjoy bringing history to life by designing and building dioramas, board games, and other projects. We use many different resources to create our projects, but lack the 21st century tools that would put us on the level of other schools. Now that we have our pens, we need the plastic filament and pedals to start us off on the right foot.

We use projects to not only learn history, but to work on skills they will need in the future like: working with others, setting goals, time management, organizing, and responsibility.

We are getting our hands dirty by building brighter students, and educated future citizens.
