My students need items to help us make music and keep us organized. These items include headphones, guitar stands, cords, ties, surge protectors, picks, and plugs.
My school is a K-6 International Baccalaureate magnet program in a large urban district. All students have music twice a week where dancing, singing, and playing instruments is the heart of our music program. We will eventually add on seventh and eighth grade, making full primary and middle school programs. I always look forward to my music classes because my students are smart, curious, funny, eager, and so loving! They are diverse in many ways; racially, economically, academically, socially, and emotionally.
The universal language of music brings us all together!
It is the great equalizer! On the other hand, our diversity is celebrated and brings different cultural strengths to our music-making!
My Project
Adding a keyboard and modern band component to our music curriculum means that we need some new equipment and a way to keep that equipment organized. For keyboards, we need surge protectors to plug everything in, headphones so students can hear themselves, over-the-door shoe organizers to hold the headphones, and velcro ties to keep all these cords organized.
A modern band is the equivalent of The School of Rock!
We need guitar stands to safely hold our guitars, cables that go from the guitar to the amp, guitar picks, and adapters to fit our instruments into sound systems. The post-it notes are to keep visual track of the songs each grade level has learned.
My students will learn how to care for their equipment, set up, and keep our room organized. They will learn how to wrap a cable, safely place a guitar, and connect equipment using inputs and outputs. They will use this equipment to learn music through playing. All together it may look like a random bunch of items, just some doodads and thingamabobs, but put them all together and you have our school JAM BAND!
