Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an loving and very energetic group of third graders. My students come from different background and have varying home lives. My students are genuine to each other and welcoming to anyone who enters our classroom. Each student has a distinct personality yet a common and strong feeling of community.
My students are innovative, creative, and ready to dive into learning.
All students are encouraged to use the inquiry process and collaboration in learning. I am privileged to be part of a group of teachers who put a great deal of time and energy into creating beautiful learning environments. As a school community we continue to grow and ensure learning is not impacted by outside factors. This resilience allows our students to thrive.
My Project
I want to bring math and science to life for students! In a traditional math curriculum, students see pictures of scales, thermometers, and beakers but rarely get to hold these items in their hands. Recently, on a hunt for digital scales and weights, I discovered many of our teachers bring these items from home. These measurement tools will allow teachers to give students concrete examples instead of the showing abstract drawings within a text book.
If we expect students to understand units of measurement they need time for authentic exploration of real measurement tools!
The more familiar students are with these units of measure the more they seek to use them during independent inquiry investigations. These measurement tools will give students hands on experience with weight, distance, liquid volume, and temperature. Most importantly, students fall in love with math and science when given an opportunity to use real scientific tools!
