Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school in a suburban, low-income neighborhood in Central Florida. A large percentage of our students are English Language Learners and all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my intensive reading students do not have access to headphones needed for our reading intervention program.
My students work hard to overcome all these challenges, and I want to do my part by providing them with the materials needed to become engaged, motivated and confident readers.
I want my students to experience the joy, excitement and curiosity that reading offers. In order to do this, they need to strengthen their reading skills.
My Project
A large part of the curriculum for my intensive reading classes is a computer program called i-Ready, which is designed to give students differentiated reading instruction. This is important since all of my students are two or more grade levels below in reading. The program requires students to listen and participate in a reading tutorial and quiz. Most of my students do not have their own headphones and our school does not provide them. Since students work in centers in my classroom, it is very difficult for students to focus on their lesson without headphones. Students on the computers become very distracted by students around them when they do not have headphones.
These headphones will ensure that my students are using the computer program effectively, which will improve their reading ability, motivation, and confidence.
Students will have access to their own headphones and will not miss out on important instruction. The durability of these headphones will support the reading needs of my students for years to come.
