My alternative education school is connected to a children’s home, an emergency shelter where the children who have been removed by child protective services reside before being placed in foster homes or returning home. Because of this, the number of children and their needs can vary on a daily basis. Many of the kids are operating in crisis mode and have trouble concentrating on their studies. I try to offer many active and interactive opportunities to make it easier for the children to learn.

We received a grant for developing an organic garden, and the kids have really enjoyed this. The garden program has been a wonderful way to help the students learn where their food comes from and has been a great tool for integrating various components of our curriculum (i.e., language arts, science, arts, and physical education). We would like to give the kids a chance to have an even more personal investment in the garden by making garden stepping stones as part of our arts curriculum. It gives the children a chance to express themselves in a constructive and concrete way—something that is very important for kids and even more important for children who have experiences with grief and loss.

For this stepping stone project, I will need 7 stepping stone kits (each containing the materials for 6 stones) so that every one of the kids can make their own garden stepping stone. I am asking for these kits because we do not have the any of the materials on hand nor are we able to buy the materials ourselves. The kits bundle all the necessary materials into one package and make it easier to focus on working with the kids rather than working to have all the materials together.

With the donations you provide, I can help the kids express themselves and plant the seed in their minds that they do have a lasting impact.
