DON'T PANIC! Have you ever had one of those days were every small issue you were presented was a major catastrophe? Welcome to the wonderful world of middle school.
My students are typical middle school students.
They try their best to smile and fake their way through the maze that is young adolescence. All the while trying to figure out who they are and why their universe is unfair, mostly to them but to their friends, neighbors, and others around the world too.
Even though all of this is going on my students are amazing. Our school is a rural school in a county which is a suburb of one of the major cities in our state. 56% of the students are white, 27% African-American, and 15% are Hispanic. 42% of the students in my school are considered economically disadvantaged.
My Project
This novel, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and our study of it will show my students the lighter side of literature. Frequently what they read as a class is serious and laden with literary devices of all sorts. This can and does lead some to believe that reading is not fun.
This is a novel that is nothing but fun. And yet it has the ability to teach us that sometimes, as cliché as it sounds, things just happen. Whether events happen fairly to one person or another is rarely in the equation.
Where else will you be faced with such honesty either in life or in literature as, "I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer"?
(Zaphod)
My student will see the humor and enjoy the absurdity and the randomness of events in this novel. I would like to share it with them and show them that literature can be fun.
After all where else are you going to learn the answer to the ultimate question in the universe?
