I teach an amazingly intelligent group of fourth grade students. I have the unique opportunity to loop with them and be their teacher for fifth grade. Looping will provide continuity for the students. We will continue our learning over the summer and enter the classroom in August with an established relationship ready to learn, explore and investigate. My class includes twenty naturally curious students consisting of eleven boys and nine girls. We are a part of a unique urban school community. More than three-quarters of my students are from low-income families. My students are hard working and many are learning a new language as well as grade-level standards.
The Time for Kids magazine will provide my students more access to engaging nonfiction material, which will increase their reading comprehension, vocabulary and literary analysis skills.
Poor or limited vocabulary, more specifically, can be an hindrance to both writing and reading comprehension. With the weekly magazine, the students will have an opportunity to read a nonfiction selection that is engaging and interesting to students. It also has a on-line component that will connect students to the internet as a powerful learning tool.
TIME magazine will provide the students in my class with a weekly, engaging, student-friendly connection to current events, history, and science. The magazine also has an on-line component that will give students a unique way to use the internet as a powerful learning tool. I will use the online teacher resources to expand my students knowledge of history, science and social studies. The TIME magazine will be a integral part of my weekly writing/social studies lesson plan. The students will also be able to have another opportunity to engage in reading and improve their vocabulary, comprehension and literary analysis skills.
