This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Every day, 98% of my students show up to class. Some experiences they come with are breathtaking, while others are so simple to prevent. I love the fact that regardless of how their lives are uncontrollable outside my four walls, they remain resilient in their efforts to return to me and are ready to become incredible human beings.
One complex issue that should never be a human experience, is hunger while learning.
Several of our students are facing hunger every day and only rely on school lunches, which their teachers can give, or share with them. I would like to start a continuous project to solve our classroom hunger. Hoping to make the class more enjoyable by providing snacks as we work, throwing starbursts across the room for correct answers, or encouraging them to try again for a fruit snack while giving their tummies some comfort. Trust me, students will write a 2-page essay for a bag of Doritos or some food.
So instead of them being hangry during class or special activities, I would like to turn class into a 'munch while we crunch' session as well as an emergency snack drawer for students who stand near me with a growling stomach. My heart breaks when I hear that sound. A complex problem with a simple solution.
Besides, the window of district-wide measurement is just around the corner, so we need to build up our stash of 'smarties and nerds' to hand out while they withstand the tedious tortures of standardized testing. If those scores could speak, I bet 70% of their answers would tie back to hangry pains. Sugar can help provide that quick fix to think and spark those dendrites. Either way, I want students to enjoy the bonding times we spent while munching during our class.
