Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are excited about learning and come to class and club each day with determination and ambition. Each one of our students is special and come from diverse backgrounds. In our science classrooms, we teach critical thinking skills and language skills together, through the construction of interactive lab reports that utilize graphics, online simulations, and hands-on experiences. Additionally, we are unique in that we provide a high number of AP and dual credit programs. Thank you for your support.
My Project
Our school's science club participated in the Austin Regional Science Fair this past February for the first time with many molecular biology and biochemistry projects winning metals. We are thrilled that one of our members participated in the state fair this month in molecular biology. Many of our students stayed after school for months working on projects. Our school is allowing our students, and new students, to continue this work by offering a dedicated science class focusing on biotechnology, bio-science, molecular biology, and microbiology. The class is project based where students solve a difficult biological question by collecting samples, extracting DNA, preforming various techniques demonstrated in the class (PCR, CRISPR, Gram staining, micro technique, DNA sequencing, SDS page, etc) and presenting findings at events through multiple stages of the class leading up to the Austin Regional Science Fair. We are currently working with local institutions of higher learning to have the class award college credit to high school students.
We are seeking support for a freezer in setting up the biotechnology class.
One of the main items needed is a dedicated freezer to keep student's samples and reagents and supplies cold. Without adequate thermoregulation chemicals and samples could go bad in a number of days and be unusable. The vacuum aspirator is used to provide suction on samples prior to freezing.
