Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in a part of Los Angeles with lots of hard working families who rely on low paying blue collar jobs or service industry jobs to make ends meet. Our school is made up of about 50% English language learners. 92% of our school families meet the federal criteria for living in poverty. Every student at our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. Our parents care deeply for their children but don't know how to best help their child achieve to their full potential. Our parents rely on our school to provide their child with all the tools they need to be successful in life.
The students at our school have many gifts and the potential to make a huge impact on the community they live in and in the world around them.
Dedicated and talented teachers guide them on the path to being a lifelong learner and a literate citizen. I am one of many hardworking teachers at our school who have made it a great place of learning. Our doors have only been open for eight years and we are now the top achieving K-8 school in the city where we are located.
My Project
Think of how much our everyday life requires machines that are operated by microprocessors. Even if you don’t want to become an electrician, you still learn about electricity in school. Computer science is the electricity of the 21st century. It’s relevant to every career. But of course, it helps that computer science leads to some of the best careers in the world. And by helping young girls and underrepresented minorities learn computer science, I will not only prepare them for the 21st century, I will address problems with inequality of opportunity or diversity in tech.
Computer science prepares all students to be active and informed contributors to our increasingly technological society whether they pursue careers in technology or not.
Computer science can be life-changing, not just skill training.
Students learn best when they are intrinsically motivated. Ozobots provide learning experiences that are active, relevant to students’ lives, and provide students authentic choice. Learning to work with Ozobots will encourage students to be curious, solve personally relevant problems and to express themselves through creation. As students learn to use the Ozobots they will start to formulate their own questions, develop their own solutions, and critique their own work. The Ozobots will be used in cooperative groups where students will discuss, negotiate, and compromise to create unique paths and experiences together. Learning to be a good communicator and compromiser is a skill we all need in life.
