My Students

I work in an academically strong district with first graders who often exceed the reading benchmarks and are already set to dive into early chapter books. With over 70 children across our first grade, my team and I are dedicated to challenging these students appropriately.

"Eager" is the best way to describe our children and their reading habits.

It is our job as educators to support all readers' needs - those for whom reading is a struggle as well as those who are ready for the next challenge.

My Project

I've been working with 4 other teachers in my school to research the important characteristics of Guided Reading Level J, K, L, and M books. We have learned that too many children are skipping over early chapter books in favor of "Thick Books."

These books will allow us to practice crucial introductions to plot, setting, and character across familiar stories, thus allowing the children to more readily apply new strategies!

As our children routinely interact with the characters and become fully involved in the patterns these series present, they will learn how to attack more difficult texts in the future!
