Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The children at our school are truly amazing. They are faced with many challenges but are always ready to tackle the tasks that await them with smiles on their faces.
They come to school every day prepared to learn and meet new challenges.
They represent different cultures, however stand together as a school community. Our children and staff are dedicated to their education, but sometimes are met with the difficulties of lack of resources.
My Project
The book, Wonder by R.J. Palacio is an inspirational book about choosing to be kind. It is about a boy born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school—until now. He's about to start 5th grade at Beecher Prep, and if you've ever been the new kid then you know how hard that can be. The thing is Auggie's just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. He tries to convince his classmates that he is just like them.
The story has wonderfully realistic family interactions (flawed, but loving), lively school scenes, and short chapters.
This book will inspire children to have better peer relationships and develop empathy. I am requesting copies of this book for all of my students. The group will then participate in class discussions and focus on positive character traits and interactions with peers.
I am confident that this book will be used as a teaching tool for years to come. Thank you for your consideration.
