My Students

My students are culturally diverse seventh graders and despite their differences, they are all youth who deserve every opportunity that can be made available to them. My students reside in a small town in North Carolina and are primarily impoverished. The school in which I teach is not only a Title I school, but it also functions on limited classroom furnishings, equipment, and supplies. My students desire to learn, but often times lack the motivation or resources to support their learning styles.

My Project

The novel "Flush" is an excellent piece of literature, as it utilizes a phenomenal story to teach students about personal values and awakens them to the meaning of being "environmentally conscientious." This novel explores the theme of developing and standing up for personal values as the protagonist takes action to protect the Florida Keys from water pollution when a casino boat is dumping its waste into the ocean.

When students question their own impact on the environment, they begin to transition from average teens to change makers.

"Flush" allows students to consider how we impact our environment and our planet, as well as what we can do to minimize the footprint that we are leaving behind.
