My students need water testing equipment in order to develop a clean water project focused on the local river, and the refill materials because we intend to involve as many students as possible and to maintain the project from year to year.
I teach introductory Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Advanced Placement Biology. Financially speaking, we are the rural poor, however we are rich in terms of our natural resources and the potential of our children.
I have brilliant, passionate students. But they don't feel as though they have any influence over things that really matter. I can't change the fact that we are financially handicapped, but I believe that I can change their attitude of complacency. I want to challenge them to contribute to the community in a lasting way.
I am blessed to have a classroom next to the only free flowing river in the state. I teach Biology and AP Biology and this river is ideal for teaching about biodiversity and the water cycle. In addition, I want my students to become passionate about this natural resource and help develop ways not only to preserve the river but the surrounding watershed as well. This is an extremely important topic for a poor county that needs more industry but not at the expense of the river. This project will not only educate my students but I believe that it will empower them as well. This is their river and their community. They can make a difference not only in the preservation of a recreational resource but also in the safe guarding of a clean water supply.
The testing materials that I am requesting will provide a vital link between my students and community events that impact them. You can give them the opportunity to learn about their own communities' resources and how to protect them. I believe that your donations will help educate my students about the importance of maintaining a safe water supply and how they can make it happen.
