My students need dry erase markers. They use them daily to solve their math problems on their desks. As a plus, I can easily review their strategies. They love it!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember the first day of school and the teacher asked the students who loved math and only a few hands went up? Now pass that same class of students a handful of dry erase markers and give them permission to work out math problems on their desk. Then ask that question again. The change is amazing!
Our school serves a small community that has a high poverty ratio.
Many students come to school without the requested school supplies. We are fortunate that our community comes together to provide snack packs and clothing for our students when needed. However, school supplies are often left up to the family. Dry erase markers can be expensive if they aren't bought on sale. We share many of our supplies, and our stock runs low early in the year.
My Project
We began the year using dry erase markers primarily for working out math problems on the students' desks. They simply love it! I have given all students the option between markers/desk and pencil/paper and every single student chose to use a marker. They want to work with the markers. Now, they have even begun writing out their spelling words in cursive on their desks too. I am having to balance finding any lesson that can be adapted to using the markers with limiting their usage as to not dry them out and dwindle our supply too fast. With only one marker left for students, we are in dire need of this valuable tool.
By simply changing the writing tool from a pencil to a dry erase marker, I am finding students are more highly engaged in their math lessons.
They are eager for practice problems, simply so they can write on their desk more. To gain any improvements in math, I have to first have my students engaged - wanting to learn. As simple as this sounds, student desire to learn is quite a mountain to climb if it is already waning. If all it takes is a simple marker, I will happily pass out the markers!
