My students need prepared microscope slides of plant cells, animal cells, blood cells, and cells undergoing various stages of replication.

I am a 7th grade Science teacher at a public charter school servicing a very low income and high need demographic of students. This year, my students are learning about Life Science. It is my hope that the knowledge and skills gained by my students this year will more than adequately prepare them for success in high school Biology.
Almost all of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and many face challenging situations in their home life. Despite these obstacles, our school is committed to giving each of our students the high quality of education that they deserve. Many are unfamiliar with most science concepts as they thus far in their educational careers have not received a high quality science curriculum. This year, I will need to bridge those gaps between the knowledge and skills they do have and what they will need to be successful in Life Science and beyond. My students have had little to no experience conducting science labs, especially utilizing technology. To fully understand the concept of cells, students must use microscopes and view actual slides of cells. This is a fundamental concept they will need to master in order to be successful in Life Science and adequately prepared for high school level Biology.
While our school does have microscopes, we have no prepared slides for students to view. Prepared slides of various types of cells and organisms are critical to aid in our students’ understanding of structures and organisms that are too small to see with the naked eye. I will need a class set of slides of various types of organisms for students to compare and contrast. For example, it will be very important for students to view slides comparing animal and plant cells. Additionally, they will need to study bacteria cells and cells undergoing replication. By having access to quality microscope slides, students will be able to utilize appropriate technology to learn the knowledge and skills they will need to be competitive in high school and college.
My students are a group of bright, motivated young adults who have so much potential if only given the tools they need to succeed. Science is all about investigation and hands on application of concepts. In order for these underprivileged students to have the high quality education they deserve and equal opportunities in Science as their peers nationwide, it is absolutely critical that they have access to the appropriate scientific equipment that will allow them to truly experience Science.
