I am a speech-language pathologist who works in a school for developmentally-disabled students. My students range in age from 5 years to 14 years and are moderately to profoundly developmentally disabled. They have a vast range of abilities, some being non-verbal and others being able to communicate in sentences. Some use pictures, augmentative and alternative communication devices, or sign language to express themselves.
Every single day, these students bring me joy.
They are always hoping to make me and the other staff smile. We work hard to accommodate their needs, but sometimes fall short due to limited financial resources. These students deserve the same quality education as any other student, and often we need to think outside of the box to educate them, which frequently means spending more money to make modifications to the curriculum to assist them with their learning.
My Project
These books will support my students in learning various social skills. The books will be incorporated into my social skills group "Don't be rude, Dude!" as I teach my students about kindness, standing up for themselves, sharing, and being mindful.
Sharing engaging books with my students is a way to get them interested in reading.
Books add another dimension to my social skills lessons and are great tools in teaching inferencing, sequencing, and what to do in various social situations.
The yoga cards and yoga book will be used during weekly yoga classes to promote mindfulness and teaching our students how to calm and regulate themselves.
