Over half of adolescent teens have been bullied online. It is hard to help students understand that there are true consequences for actions "behind the screen." Students at our school are in desperate need of a reading activity that will get them excited about reading and learning.
Our students are very involved in online social media and love using technology to communicate.
They need to develop a better understanding of digital citizenship while growing as readers. Our students have never seen the power of a school-wide read that leaves everyone in the building discussing what they are reading. This would be so exciting. Many struggling or reluctant readers have never found a book that hooked them and touched them in a way that they can never forget.
My Project
Each classroom in our school would like to read the book Backlash with their students. This book is a real-life story about a cyber-bullying incident that will hook them from the very beginning. Even reluctant readers would not be able to put this book down. While reading, students will practice a set of reading skills that we have decided to try for the year called Signposts. Students would be excited about going to their daily reading improvement class as they would be so engaged in a gripping story that they can relate to and learn from. Students can show growth and understanding of the reading skills being practiced by engaging in the text. Our students really need a true and authentic way to teach them about consequences of online behaviors. It is equally important that they acquire new reading skills and learn to use them frequently. While reading this book, many things could be accomplished.
When students read this book, their lives change forever.
Students would remember the plot line and activities completed while reading the book for years to come. By doing this project, we could help students grow as readers, become more responsible members of society using social media, get them excited about reading, and help them to become life-long readers. This project would make more impact on the students than any I have seen in some time. Please help us make it happen!
