Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Story time is one of my students' favorite time of the day! Stories are meant to be heard over and over again. Remember your child's favorite story that you have practically memorized due to the frequent request to be read? I want my students to hear their favorite stories as often as they wished
I teach in a title I school in Southern California where all students receive free meals.
I have 18 wonderful first graders, who are English learners, and they are eager to learn! Having the opportunity to listen to a story a few times will definitely be beneficial towards their vocabulary development, reading fluency, and reading comprehension.
My Project
The listening center in my class is closed. Some of the headphones' cushions are missing. The students complaint about the headphones hurting their ears when they used them. The wires get all tangled up when the store them away and it takes time to untangle them. Needless to say story time has not been very enjoyable. I find time within the busy schedule to always read to my students, but it is not enough. They need to hear the stories more than once.
Having a mobile listening center will allow my students to listen to stories at their pace as often as they need during universal access time. Hearing stories read fluently will serve as a model for my students. Hearing the stories will help strengthen their comprehension and increase their vocabulary. Having the headphones being wireless will allow them to listen to the stories on the rug where there is more room and less restriction of movements. They can enjoy listening to the stories sitting or lying on their tummies.
Funds for resources at our school are limited due to budget cuts.
With your donation, you will be giving 18 deserving students a chance to escape into a world of limitless stories. Reopening the listening center will help promote literacy and develop my students' love of reading.
