This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 3rd, 4th and 5th grade special education. My classroom is designed for students who learn differently and need an individualized approach. Students' learning may be impacted by a variety of differences such as learning disabilities, Autism, chromosomal abnormalities, etc.
My classroom is a safe second home for special learners to learn reading, writing, math, science, social and life skills.
Differences are not deficits. In my classroom, students are empowered and encouraged. Thank you for your impact on this unique and deserving community!
My Project
"Oral Fixation" is when students self-soothe by chewing or sucking on items for comfort. Everyone experiences anxiety at times, but students with special needs are more likely to have anxiety around school. One way we can reduce anxiety is by providing ways to satisfy these sensory needs.
Silicone "chewies" allow students to meet their sensory needs in a socially acceptable way instead of putting clothing, fingers or pencils in mouths.
I've asked for pencil toppers for each of my students, in different colors so they can tell them apart. I've also asked for novelty chewy necklaces for a particular student who has a strong urge to chew.
