Speaking and listening - the development of perseverance and fortitude. It's a challenge to impress on students how important these skills are when they have instant gratification and endless entertainment.
Students today are learning against sound bites and fake news.
They don't see the power of research and deep mining of facts and data. They'd rather speak in bullet points and shock statements. They want to know more and think critically, but they don't see anything besides a "research paper" at the end that work.
This year, I'll be asking students to develop 30 minute podcasts instead. A podcast will build all of these skills for students. These podcasts will required deep research, facts on all sides of the "aisle" and a thoughtful discussion of give-and-take between participants. Moreover, we'll develop academic integrity, character, citizenship, communication and collaboration skills - real-life and workplace skills.
Please consider donating to this project. Thank you so much for your support of public educaiton.
The Behringer podcast kits provide a basic starter for our kids. Fewer components allow even the most "tech-nervous" students the chance to participate in a podcast. Two kits means twice the opportunities and participation of our students.
Students will learn the importance of deep and accurate research, practice and develop critical listening skills, and most importantly experience first-hand the power of the First Amendment.
There are many "untested" life skills we develop in our students: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Citizenship and Character. Your generous contribution will provide 21st century resources for our kids to practice these. With podcast equipment, we are helping specifically to build our students skills in communication, collaboration and the their knowledge of responsible, active citizenry.
