My students need books about financial literacy, a money reader's theater for first grade, math games, and iPads to improve their money, counting and math skills.
Children can learn financial literacy at a young age, and as a teacher, I have a plan to help them achieve this goal. With direct instruction on money skills and plenty of practice, they can learn to count and understand financial concepts. The books, games and iPads will help accomplish this.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
said it best- "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education." I am a first grade teacher in a rural area in Idaho. My students' economic situations are just as varied as their family dynamics. We celebrate the diversity in our school and we love being known as the "Stars." Seventy percent of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. Regardless of these factors, every one of my students has a great desire to create, learn, explore, play, and to think critically.
My Project
I read to my children every day. However, when I looked at the materials I have to teach our money unit in math, I realized I do not have many books to read aloud to them on this subject. I am really excited about the Reader's theater that the children can do as a class. It teaches them about money at a first grade level. I have chosen eight other books that I also think will enhance our knowledge of money. The money dice, money kit, Math Whiz, and Light 'n Strike game will give my students practice in adding, subtracting, and counting money as well as recognizing the different coins they are required to learn. The iPads will be used in small groups to give them additional practice with money. I have been researching different applications that can be used on the iPads at their lower level. Some of these applications include Learning Money with Leo, Save! The Game, P2K Money, and Kids Money.
The applications I would like to purchase for the iPads will teach my students the value of money, financial needs versus wants, saving, and planning.
Children are in their prime learning years and can absorb such concepts as the value of money, what it means to earn money, and the benefits of saving. In today's economic reality, it is more important than ever that we help children learn about managing money. I know the iPads, games, and books will be a great benefit in teaching these skills.
