Doing Right by My Left-handed Students

Help me give my students the shears they need to complete their sewing-related tasks and the sheaths to keep the students safe and equipment undamaged.

My Project

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. I see 150 energetic high school students every day, and I want my students to apply fashion & textiles concepts through hands-on projects without the concern of shared equipment. I want my students to get involved in their learning every step of the way, which also means providing them the equipment they need to succeed.

It's just not fair to give a left-handed student right-handed shears and assume they'll be precise and successful.

Last semester I had six more "lefties" than I had left-handed shears.

I teach Intro to Fashion & Textiles to students in grades 9-12 in a rapidly expanding public high school on the west side of Indianapolis.

In addition to our textiles lessons and labs, students will participate in hands-on experiences for various construction techniques. They learn anything from hand-embroidery to machine sewing.

The materials we're requesting will support left-handed students who struggle to cut accurately when using our right-handed shears. With the appropriate tools, students will be able to cut the material instead of themselves. The sheaths will keep the shears in good working condition between uses as well as keep the students safe when they pull them out of their sewing kits.

Students will use the shears for their felt monster embroidery project, soup bowl kozy project, their upcycled fashion project, and their pajama pants. I can't wait to see their improvement in cutting out their materials and how that translates into a higher quality finished product.
