I have the sweetest 160 students in the world. They are inquisitive, care about the world they live in, and push themselves to succeed even on their hardest days. A very diverse student body, there is no majority demographic in my classes. These students are skilled at putting aside their differences and building a community of learners. Students come in early and stay late to help clean and do little things around the classroom. They beg to stand by the door and greet each other as they walk in.
Help fund a semester-long field research project for my biology classes!
We're looking to determine the ecosystem health of the dog park near our school and use our research to design an ecologically sustainable dog park. Students will get to design and conduct their own research, hone observation and data collection skills, analyze their results with statistics, and present their research to the parks and rec department. But we can't conduct this research without tools! That's where you come in.
My Project
This project is requesting outdoor science materials - clipboards, measuring tapes, bug boxes, and butterfly nets. With these data collection tools, students will conduct their own scientific research at the local dog park to present to the parks and rec department. They will get practice observing, collecting data, measuring transect lines, collecting specimen for analysis--all to create a biodiversity index of the neighboring dog park. Right now, the biology curriculum has students inside for the majority of the year. Students do better when they have authentic, real-world projects that focus on their own community.
Biology is the study of LIFE, so we need to be outside, studying the health of our urban ecosystem.
These tools will allow my students to break down barriers, get outside, and see themselves as scientists.
