This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I'm a 4th grade public school teacher at Guadalupe Elementary school, trying to reinforce lifelong reading habits as well as the love of reading in my 33 students. Our school is located in the Crocker Amazon neighborhood near the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Most students are learning English as a Second Language with Chinese, Spanish, Tagolag or Samoan being spoken in the home. My students and their families are very hard workers. Many of my students' parents hold two and three jobs. We all know that reading a good book is better sprawled on the sofa or a bed than sitting ramrod straight at a desk. When I place a comfy pillow on the floor for a student to do his/her 15 minutes of daily silent reading, s/he kicks up his/her feet and gets into it!! I am requesting five big round floor pillows to spread around my classroom. These pillows will allow my students to relax while reading and will therefore increase their reading skills. Guaranteed!
