Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students deserve the same opportunities as students in neighboring schools and districts! They have great potential! Many of my students have personal struggles and tragedies to deal with outside the classroom. School is a safe place for them, and the majority of students love being here!
Many of my students cannot afford basic supplies, let alone resources above the basics to enrich their learning experience.
This is why I turn to DonorsChoose to advocate on their behalf! I teach middle school math in a public city school where 98% of my students come from low income homes.
My Project
Whether it's during the first few minutes of class or last few minutes of class, students use post-its and index cards to write down and solve math problems! Students will use the Guest Check books during our unit on percents (tips, taxes, total amount) to simulate dining out experiences!
It is very important for me (the teacher) to be able to quickly assess EACH student's level of understanding.
I collect the post-its (or index cards) and sort them to look for common misconceptions and/or good examples to show the class. I can quickly determine which students need extra help and which students are ready to move on! I then share the feedback with the students so they can see how well they are doing! Students can stick the post-its on their notes for safe-keeping!
The post-its and index cards in this project are either lined or have a grid on them. This is especially important in the units that include number lines, plotting, graphing, and even solving equations. The grid and lines help students write neatly and keep their math work organized step by step! The check books allow students to simulate the experience of dining out in a restaurant, calculating tips, and total amounts!
(This project also includes some small prizes...because who doesn't like a prize for winning a review game?)
