Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title 1 school in Colorado. Our students come from diverse economic and ethnic backgrounds. Our students have chosen to come to our school to have a better opportunity for success.
They are excellent students that want to be successful in and out of school and do everything they can to make that happen in an environment where that may not be the norm.
We believe all students can be successful and try to give them all the tools they need to reach their goals. Our staff works hard to prepare our students for life after school and how they will be able to succeed on their own.
Teaching middle school students can sometimes be very challenging. Our students are not the normal group of young teenagers. They are very respectful, hard working, happy kids. We spend a lot time working with them to make sure that they are able to succeed by providing an environment that is respectful and thoughtful of others. Our students do not always have the economic or home life advantages of others, but always make it easy for their teachers to want to further their academic success.
My Project
Our school will host a dodgeball league for the district as a way to support our culminating international trip. Students have the option to go their 8th grade year on an international trip but their families have to pay for the trip on their own. Our school is public and does not fund any part of the excursion for the students.
The class trip is an amazing learning opportunity for our students to grow and see the world with their friends at very young age.
The dodgeball league will teach our students the value of working towards their goal. They will also have the opportunity to play a sport that has very low entry as to cost, equipment, and ability. We hope to fund part of each student's trip with this district wide league. Past students have had to decline going on the trip because of lack of funds. Our goal is to aid those families as much as we can with this fundraiser. This supplies will be used to fund many different trips.
