Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher that works in our after-school program, I have the great privilege of interacting with many different students that are participating in a variety of different sports and clubs. Our student-athletes come to school excited about representing the school and wearing the school's uniform as they compete. They have patience and commitment as nearly every competitive team we have started as an extra-curricular intramural activity. Our students love to compete and participate in any activity they can.
I teach at a Title I School in Nevada in which a high percentage of my students come from bilingual homes and receive free lunch.
My students often face tough obstacles in their lives but arrive to school smiling and ready to learn. They love their teachers and they adore their principal. Our school truly is a community – a family. We each do our part, as student and teacher work side by side with one mission in mind: our students’ success. We set high expectations and each classroom in our school has their college graduation date written on the board to remind students to achieve their dreams.
My Project
My school has a very active after-school program in which hundreds of our students are participants. We have a variety of different clubs and sports that we offer and one such sport is dodgeball. We are new members of a school sports league and we are hoping to create a competitive dodgeball team with our upper-elementary and middle school students. This is the first attempt we have made to create this team and this project is a crucial step in that creation process.
My students need a dozen dodgeballs for our newly created dodgeball Team.
These students will be pioneers for their sport just as the basketball team and volleyball team were before them. This project will have an immediate impact on our students and will provide them with the only thing that they are lacking at this time. History will be made if we can get this team created as we will be on the path to another highly successful after-school activity for our student-athletes.
