My Students

We live in an increasingly visual world. It has never been more important that students be able to develop visual literacy. In order to be informed citizens students must not merely be able to break down and critically analyze visual journalism but also be able to build stories from the ground up.

My students are high school students in a diverse first ring suburb just outside Buffalo, NY.

They are wonderful kids; energetic, curious, creative and socially aware. This project will benefit students in my Digital Writing Workshop elective, a cutting edge senior English elective where students take their research and writing and go beyond traditional print schoolwork to create podcasts and documentary films. Students come in daily, huddle around their computers and weave their stories through video, voice, and text.

My Project

This year my students have been selected to partner with PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs. Students will be asked to create professional news packages that share the young adult perspective on a variety of social issues and topics. Students will be exploring such issues as school safety, community problem solving, midterm elections and scientific innovation. Students will interview peers and gather expert opinions so they may present fair and balanced news stories which reveal insight into how these topics impact adolescents. As of right now we lack the professional equipment needed to film and record interviews. The DSLR camera will capture high definition broadcast level video and the tripod will allow us to create stable and professional shots. The sound recorder captures broadcast quality sound which can then be added in the editing phase. The camera bag is necessary for students to go out into the field to interview their subjects.

Your donation will go a long way in leveling the playing field and providing my students with the basic tools they need to tell stories that are professional and meet broadcast standards.

By empowering these students voices you will be directly investing in their ability to tell stories that will make a difference in our community, develop the requisite skills needed to thrive in this Information Age and develop their vision from storyboard to screens around the nation.
